The Colours of Nicaragua
The “Colours of Nicaragua” Exhibition, brought to you by the Nicaragua House Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the Embassy of Nicaragua and Zari Gallery, is an immersive multi-sensorial journey through the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes, via its unique and beautiful culture, nature, people, landscapes, handicrafts and living traditions, as well as the tantalising taste of Nicaraguan Single Origin Fine Cocoa Dark Chocolate, Special Aroma Coffee, and ultra premium Single Estate Flor de Caña Rum, some of the world’s finest products which, with their fresh, natural purity, convey the flavours of Nicaragua’s lush tropical lands, the passion of the people, and the intricate knowledge, passed down from generation to generation over hundreds of years - in some cases millennia - which makes these exquisite treats so special.
Nicaragua’s identity is deeply felt by all who know the country, and is forged from thousands of years of settlement, conquest, federations, empires, republics and revolutions, shaped by an astounding geography of volcanic formations, immense lakes, gargantuan rivers, rainforests, canyons and more, home to 7% of the world’s biodiversity, a land which when the Spanish arrived in the 15th century, was home to three separate indigenous language families, living in a great variety of societal forms. This Mestizaje, the mixing of the Spanish and indigenous population, has been supplemented over the time by African and other European influences, including British (the country’s Creole population on the Caribbean Coast speaks English as a first language), creating the multiethnic, multilingual and multicultural melting pot which is Nicaragua today; a vivid, vivacious canvass of colours which never fails to enchant the visitor, and which this Exhibition conveys through varied photographs, paintings and objects.
As the centrepiece of the Exhibition, you will find the Güegüense, the iconic and quintessential Nicaraguan cultural expression - recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity - a satirical musical and dance play brimming with colour, performed by locals wearing traditional clay masks and costumes, each depicting an archetypal character. Created and set in the colonial era, this play - written in a mix of Spanish and the Nahuatl indigenous language - conveys through humour, irony and innuendo, the wit, creativity and resilience of the Nicaraguan national character, as the Güegūense (meaning “wise old man” in Nahuatl) navigates the imperial system and establishes a marriage between his son and the daughter of the Spanish governor, thereby depicting the fusion of these cultures over time. Traced back to the small town of Diriamba in the seventeenth century, where it is still performed yearly, this charming and fascinating play is a “must-see” for any visitor to the country!
